Hues · macOS menu bar
Hues
Light or Dark, in one keystroke. A tiny menu bar app that flips your whole Mac between Light and Dark mode, with no trip to System Settings.
Features
Everything it does fits in one menu.
One global hotkey
Press ⌃⌥⌘D from any app, or record your own shortcut. Any combo with ⌘, ⌥ or ⌃ works, and so do F-keys.
Always shows your mode
A sun in Light mode, a moon in Dark mode. The icon also updates when the mode changes from System Settings or on a schedule.
Lightweight and native
Written in Swift with AppKit, with a 172 KB binary. It runs only in the menu bar, with no Dock icon and no windows.
Minimal permissions
No Accessibility access needed. Hues asks once to control System Events, which is the supported way to change the appearance.
Launch at Login
A single checkbox in the menu starts Hues automatically when you log in.
Install
Drag, approve, toggle.
Hues is signed and notarized with Apple, so it opens like any other Mac app.
Download and drag
Open Hues-1.0.dmg and drag Hues into the Applications folder shortcut.
Allow System Events
Your first toggle asks for permission to control System Events. Click OK. If you decline, re-enable it under Privacy & Security → Automation.
Press the hotkey
⌃⌥⌘D flips the mode. Change the shortcut any time from the menu bar.
Day to night. Night to day.
One shortcut, zero windows, and a menu bar icon that always tells the truth about your Mac's appearance.
